Corey J. Portnoy, an associate in the Jacksonville office of Marshall Dennehey Warner Coleman & Goggin, has been appointed to the Board of Directors of the Down Syndrome Association of Jacksonville (DSAJ). In this role, Mr. Portnoy will help oversee many facets of the organization, including its Career Solutions Training Program, “Empower, Engage & Employ,” which provides training to individuals with Down Syndrome to help them become successfully employed.

Mr. Portnoy has long been a passionate supporter of community organizations. While completing his undergraduate studies at the University of Florida, he founded an annual competition between fraternities and sororities that has raised more than $100,000 for the Children’s Miracle Network (CMN) in the past decade. It was also through his involvement with the CMN that he had the opportunity to interact with children with Down syndrome.

“I was always moved by people with Down syndrome as these individuals are such a powerful source of happiness,” said Mr. Portnoy. “I was recently inspired to get involved with the Jacksonville Down Syndrome Association after seeing the strength and positivity of an individual with Down syndrome at my gym, and after watching two segments on ESPN that showcased college football coaches and their relationships with two team “managers” who had Down syndrome. From there I knew I wanted to volunteer in any way I could.”

The DSAJ is a nonprofit organization committed to helping people with Down syndrome achieve their full potential and to creating a community that is educated, supportive and inclusive of individuals with Down syndrome.

As a member of Marshall Dennehey Warner Coleman & Goggin’s Casualty Department, Mr. Portnoy focuses his practice on maritime law, shipping litigation, cargo subrogation, premises liability, transportation law and employment law.
