W. James Hindman

W. James "Jim" Hindman, founder of Jiffy Lube International and the Hindman Foundation, has been recognized by Heartrepreneur LLC with its annual International Heart-repreneur® of the Year recognition.

This award recognizes individuals who run their lives and businesses with heart – authentically and transparently with the objective of helping others achieve their goals. Hindman was selected from dozens of nominees from around the world.

"At 82-years-old, Mr. Hindman has demonstrated being a life-long Heartrepreneur®," said Dr. Terri Levine, Chief Heartrepreneur® and CEO at Heartrepreneur LLC. "Mr. Hindman's heart-based approach is evident throughout his multiple entrepreneurial and philanthropic endeavors, as well as in his personal life. We believe he exemplifies his Foundation's mission of Generating Help. Regenerating Hope."

About Jim Hindman

Even in college in the 1950s, W. J. "Jim" Hindman was concerned about others. Jim and his wife founded an Independent Party as an alternative to fraternities, because the fraternities barred people on the basis of race and ethnicity.

Jim began his professional career in hospital administration. Parlaying his success in the healthcare industry, Hindman acquired and managed several heart-centered nursing homes.

When Jim founded Jiffy Lube, he brought 25 of his students and business associates along with him to provide them with entrepreneurial opportunities. It was very lucrative for all involved.

After Jim made his first million by age 35, he coached football at Western Maryland College (now McDaniel College) near Baltimore, Maryland. He coached for a salary of $1.00 per year. He wanted to give back and provide guidance to young people.

Jim never lost sight of his upbringing in an Iowa orphanage. After making millions in Jiffy Lube, he set up an organization to help troubled youth.

Jim continues his life-long mission of finding a need and filling it – this time in the area of age-related macular degeneration. Diagnosed at age 57, and eventually declared legally blind, Jim found a way out of the darkness thanks to an implantable miniature microscope. The Hindman Foundation helps others who suffer from this devastating disease – a number one cause of adult blindness.

Jim's book, Was Blind But Now I See, chronicles his visionary journey. All proceeds support his philanthropic efforts.
