WILLOW GROVE, Pa.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--NMS Labs is pleased to announce that Dr. Marilyn Huestis will be joining its team of expert toxicologists and analytical scientists as Senior Scientific Advisor. Dr. Huestis is among the world’s leading authorities on clinical and forensic aspects of illicit drug use. She has authored or co-authored 425 publications over the last 25 years and built a world renowned clinical research and analytical toxicology center at the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) Intramural Research Program, from which she retired in January this year. Her role as a consultant scientist at NMS Labs will be to guide key research and development initiatives in the area of clinical studies and forensic tests, bringing her insight and understanding of both illicit and therapeutic drug effects and disposition to help enhance NMS Labs already highly regarded testing menu.
In announcing the move, Dr. Barry Logan, NMS Labs’ Vice President of Forensic Science Initiatives, notes, “I’m delighted to welcome Marilyn to the NMS Labs team. We have been colleagues for over twenty years and collaborated professionally in many ways, but to have her help guide our path forward in areas of designer drug testing, clinical studies, oral fluid drug testing and cannabinoid testing will help our growth in these critical areas tremendously.”
Dr. Huestis is currently in Australia giving lectures and meeting with representatives from the Australian Department of Health, and is the 2016 Victorian Institute of Forensic Medicine Graeme Schofield Orator. Dr. Huestis said, “I am happy to be joining the many outstanding scientists at NMS Labs as Senior Scientific Advisor, as it provides me with new opportunities and resources to address major public health and safety issues such as drug impaired driving, designer drugs, in utero drug exposure, and cannabis medicalization and legalization. Each of these areas requires specialized toxicological testing and instrumentation which is one of NMS labs great strengths. NMS has a strong reputation in the community for developing new tests that provide critical information for forensic practitioners, clinicians, treatment providers, researchers, drug policy strategists and legislators in their understanding of drug use and its consequences. I am very excited to be working together with NMS Labs to offer clients relevant new analytical tests.”
In addition to her involvement in R&D and clinical and research studies, Dr. Huestis will also be providing expert testimony and legislative input at NMS Labs. She will be appointed as a Fellow at the Center for Forensic Science Research and Education at the Fredric Rieders Family Foundation, where she will continue in one of her favorite roles as mentor and advisor to young scientists.
