Bob Olsen and Joseph T. Kelley III
Aside from providing standard legal services, the attorneys at Offit Kurman serve their clients as business advisors, partners, and—sometimes—collaborators. One such collaborative project occurred last month, when Bob Olsen, CEO of COMPASS Cybersecurity and the North Star Group, teamed up with the Offit Kurman health care and privacy attorney, and chair of the Privacy and Data Security Practice Group Joseph T. Kelley III to present “HIPAA Risk Assessments: Why Worry Now?” before the Philadelphia Alliance of Community Services Providers.
Throughout their two-hour presentation, Mr. Kelley and Mr. Olsen addressed the Alliance’s members on the importance of performing Security Risk Assessments for HIPAA compliance as well as those Assessments’ use as a governance tool to protect directors and senior management. First chartered in 1969, the Alliance unites local agencies that provide community-based health and human services including for behavioral health, substance use disorder, autism, intellectual disabilities, educational services, and home care.

Mr. Olsen drew on his expertise in the field of cybersecurity to give Alliance members a deep understanding of issues such as policy development, organizational training, and remote monitoring. The North Star Group, which he founded a decade ago, has been ranked in the Inc. 500/5000, and has earned recognition as a SmartCEOSmart100 Best Run company in the Mid-Atlantic region. COMPASS, short for Comprehensive Applied Security Solutions, is a wholly owned subsidiary of North Star Group that focuses on cybersecurity intelligence and risk management.
“It was a pleasure working alongside Bob for this presentation,” said Mr. Kelley. “I hope we have the opportunity to do it again soon. As a veteran, entrepreneur, and influential business leader in our community, Bob has a wealth of wisdom to offer others, such as health care providers, who are concerned with cybersecurity. And I know many of our firm’s other clients are similarly equipped to speak on equally consequential issues that affect all of us.”
