Airbnb announced today that hosts in Pennsylvania’s ski communities are expected to welcome approximately 111,400 guest arrivals during the 2019 ski season, with local hosts expected to earn a total of approximately $12.7 million in supplemental income.
In addition, during President’s Day Weekend -- historically one of the busiest times of year for US ski communities -- communities across Pennsylvania, including Fairfield and Uniontown, could witness their biggest weekend for Airbnb ever. During President’s Day Weekend, Fairfield will see a 45-percent increase over last year; and in Uniontown, a 91-percent increase.
"As ski season kicks into high gear this President’s Day Weekend, home sharing is helping to bring critical tourism dollars into communities across Pennsylvania, benefiting residents and small businesses alike,” said Josh Meltzer, Head of Northeast Policy for Airbnb. “By offering more affordable accommodation options, Airbnb is not only helping more families spend a weekend away on the slopes, but also generating extra income for homeowners throughout the state."
Of the 111,400 Airbnb guests who will experience Pennsylvania this ski season, over one in four are families. The majority of guests are from New York, New Jersey as well as from other corners of the Keystone State. In total, guests are from 66 countries, all 50 US states and about 3,100 cities worldwide.
Approximately 2,300 Pennsylvania hosts will open their doors this ski season. 17 percent of these hosts are sharing their home for the first time; 56 percent are women and nearly one in five are seniors. The typical host will make $2,700 over the course of the season.
The top five most popular destination cities this ski season are Scranton, East Stroudsburg, Emerald Lakes, Tannersville and Albrightsville. The Poconos specifically have experienced a 179-percent increase in Airbnb guest arrivals.
