IP and Data Privacy Attorney Corinne Militello Returns to Ballard Spahr

9/12/16

Corinne A. Militello—an attorney with extensive in-house and private practice experience in intellectual property and data privacy and security matters, particularly in the health care sector—has rejoined Ballard Spahr as Counsel in the Philadelphia office, firm Chair Mark Stewart announced today.

Ms. Militello advises on brand protection—from trademark clearance through registration and enforcement, domain name strategy and protection, and the drafting and negotiation of license and settlement agreements. She negotiates agreements involving copyrightable works, independent contractors, non-disclosure issues, and licensing. She also counsels clients on data privacy and security matters.

Ms. Militello joins the firm from the University of Pennsylvania, where she handled privacy matters for its five hospitals, more than 200 physician practices, and its medical school research program. In that role, she oversaw Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act compliance—including the patient privacy complaint process—and issues involving the privacy and security of electronic records.

Before joining the University of Pennsylvania, Ms. Militello was an Associate at Ballard Spahr. She represented Houghton Mifflin Harcourt in copyright litigation and advised the American Board of Internal Medicine in litigation matters related to medical certification exam copyright and information security issues. She counseled numerous clients on the preparation of privacy policies, drafted data-sharing agreements, and assisted in internal investigations involving consumer privacy issues.

"Corinne brings a solid background in trademark and copyright law as well as the perspective that comes from practicing at a world-renowned academic medical center and research university," said Mitchell A. Katz, Chair of Ballard Spahr’s Intellectual Property Department. "She is exceptionally well-suited to advise our clients and we’re thrilled to have her back at the firm."

"The protection and enforcement of both intellectual property and data is critically important to our clients. Corinne has deep experience in both.” said Lynn E. Rzonca, leader of the firm’s Trademarks and Copyrights practice groups. "She is an exceptional lawyer and an excellent addition in every way."

Said Ms. Militello: "Ballard has always been a firm that is truly dedicated to excellence and client service. I’m delighted to return and work with lawyers at the top of their game in both IP and data privacy and security."
