Modern Healthcare recognized ChristianaCare president and CEO Janice Nevin, M.D., MPH, as one of this year’s 50 Most Influential Clinical Executives.

The recognition program acknowledges clinicians working in the health care industry who are deemed by their peers and an expert panel to be the most influential in terms of demonstrating leadership and impact.

Modern Healthcare highlighted that Dr. Nevin was a vocal supporter of Delaware Gov. John Carney’s stay-at-home orders to mitigate the spread of Coronavirus. Under Dr. Nevin’s leadership, ChristianaCare also held a unique drive-through testing event in March to protect the community, mitigate the spread of Coronavirus and reduce demands on emergency departments. The drive through occurred only two days after Delaware experienced its first confirmed case of Coronavirus.

“This prestigious recognition reaffirms the tremendous, positive impact that Dr. Nevin is making on our community,” said Doneene Keemer Damon, Esq., president of Richards, Layton & Finger, and the chair of the Board of Directors of ChristianaCare. “Dr. Nevin empowers our organization’s caregivers to continuously look for ways to innovate and to help our neighbors with compassion and generosity. We are grateful for the quality and effectiveness of her leadership as we continue to focus on making high-quality care equitable to all.”

In addition, ChristianaCare was one of only 17 health care providers nationwide to obtain a grant under the U.S. Federal Communication Commission’s COVID-19 Telehealth Program to support its existing telehealth capabilities to help underserved populations at risk for contracting Coronavirus. In the midst of the pandemic, ChristianaCare also opened the state-of-the-art Center for Women’s & Children’s Health at Christiana Hospital in Newark, Del., welcoming women and babies with a transformative new model of care and a beautiful new space that’s built for families.

Since her appointment to CEO of ChristianaCare in 2015, Dr. Nevin has heralded the transformation of the organization from a health care system to a system that truly impacts health. Dr. Nevin is nationally recognized for innovation in patient- and family-centered care and population health, as well as her assertion that great health care is built on the values of love and excellence.

In selecting its 50 most influential clinical executives, Modern Healthcare noted that clinical leadership is needed now, more than ever, to champion evidence-based approaches that will mitigate the impact of the pandemic and address the longstanding health inequities that have become even clearer as a result of the crisis.

“Healthcare organizations are utilizing their greatest assets as they transform: their former front-line clinicians. Former and practicing physicians and nurses have taken the helms of healthcare providers across the country and improved quality of care, patient satisfaction and margins,” said Aurora Aguilar, editor of Modern Healthcare. “One of the members of 2020’s 50 Most Influential Clinical Executives was a doctor who helped drive value-based reimbursement growth at one of the country’s largest providers. Another is a physician who revolutionized patient rehabilitation. And another is a chief nursing officer who improved care efficiency at a large system. We can’t forget one physician who managed to make huge waves at a federal agency while maintaining bipartisan support. Modern healthcare congratulates the honorees and thanks them for their contributions to patient care.”

Established in 1974, Modern Healthcare is the nation’s leading industry-intensive news magazine for health system executives. The complete ranking is featured in the June 15 issue of Modern Healthcare, and profiles of the honorees are available at ModernHealthcare.com/50MostInfluential.
