Joel N. Myers
Dr. Joel N. Myers, Founder, President and Chairman of AccuWeather, has been selected by the Homecoming Executive Committee to represent Penn State University as Grand Marshal for Homecoming 2016. Each year, the Committee chooses an outstanding alumna or alumnus who has excelled in their field of study and continues to positively represent the University.
"We are excited to have Dr. Joel Myers represent Penn State Homecoming as our 2016 Grand Marshal. He has put so much passion into his field and it is clear that he is committed to giving back to Penn State," said Shannon McConnell, Homecoming 2016 Alumni Relations Director. "Dr. Myers and AccuWeather are significant supporters of both the University and our organization through various scholarships, donations, and continued dedication to Penn State's success."
Myers received his B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. in Meteorology from Penn State where he was in important influence as a faculty member for nearly 20 years. He has been an important force on the Penn State Board of Trustees for over 33 years and continues to serve as an Emeritus Trustee, demonstrating his lifelong commitment to education. Myers was recently awarded Penn State's highest honor, the Distinguished Alumni Award.
Myers is grateful for the quality of education and support he received at Penn State, including life-changing mentorship from Dr. Charles L. Hosler, Professor Emeritus of Meteorology, Senior Vice President for Research, and Dean of the Graduate School Emeritus. "I received a terrific education at Penn State with great mentorship from faculty and graduate students. It is an honor to be chosen as Homecoming Grand Marshal, representing Penn State alumni who are transforming industries and peoples' lives in many important ways around the world," said Myers.
A lifetime member of the Penn State Alumni Association and resident of State College, Myers donates his time and resources and is committed to giving back to Penn State University and his community. Myers' contributions include a multi-million dollar gift to Penn State's Meteorology Department for The Joel N. Myers Weather Center, a state-of-the-art teaching facility, in addition to the interactive sundial at The Arboretum at Penn State, walk-in sundial at The Nittany Lion Inn, and weather vane atop Beaver Stadium - one of the largest weather vanes in the world. This year's official Penn State Homecoming logo is also modeled after the Beaver Stadium weather vane. Myers has also awarded dozens of scholarships to Penn State students in Meteorology and Information Technology and is regularly asked to speak at the University.
Myers will participate in various events during the Penn State vs. Maryland Football Homecoming Weekend from October 6-8 including the Homecoming Parade, and be recognized at halftime of the Homecoming football game. Penn State Homecoming is a student-run organization that celebrates tradition and instills pride in all members of the Penn State family through active engagement of students, alumni, faculty, and staff across the community.
