Emily Catlett, New Rowing/Academic Manager for Philadelphia City Rowing
Philadelphia City Rowing, which was established in 2010 to empower Philadelphia public school students through the sport of rowing, today announced the hiring of Emily Catlett as the organization’s Manager of Rowing & Academics. She began her duties at PCR on Monday, August 8th.
Catlett comes to PCR with an extensive background in coaching as well as academic support. She began her rowing career in high school at Potomac Boat Club in Washington, DC. Continuing to row in college, Catlett selected the University of Wisconsin and received her bachelor’s degree. After graduating she moved to California and shortly thereafter began coaching at UC Davis as the Novice Women’s Coach (1991-1994). After three years she was elevated to Women’s Head Coach where she stayed for more than a decade.
During her tenure at UC Davis, Catlett forged the way from club to varsity status in 1996-1997, oversaw the building of a new boathouse, won back-to-back NCAA Division II National Championships (2001-2002, 2002-2003) and moved the program up to NCAA Division I status. While coaching the Aggies, Catlett honed her academic support skills and attained two Master’s degrees, a MS in Educational Counseling and a MA in Art Therapy. She retired from collegiate coaching in 2007 and began her next chapter as a high school, middle school and community college counselor. She recently moved to the Philadelphia area and served as Substitute Counselor at Radnor Middle School.
“Emily’s commitment to the development of young people through academic, athletic, and personal growth and achievement fits perfectly with our mission,” said Terry Dougherty, PCR’s Executive Director. “She has a great deal to contribute to the continued success of Philadelphia City Rowing and will benefit PCR with her vast academic counseling experience.”
Philadelphia City Rowing uses competitive rowing as a vehicle to improve the health, well-being, self-confidence and academic success of Philadelphia’s public school students while involving them in one of Philadelphia’s greatest sporting traditions.
Established in 2010, Philadelphia City Rowing works to empower Philadelphia public school students through the sport of rowing. Philadelphia City Rowing was founded based on the principle that rowing teaches discipline, perseverance, and teamwork, and works to reinforce these values and help student-athletes extend them to all aspects of their lives. To this end, Philadelphia City Rowing provides academic support services and a mentoring program that pairs student-athletes with adult role models from the rowing.
